Job Description

Introduction

The Malawi – Liverpool – Wellcome – Programme (MLW) is an internationally recognized centre for research and training, funded by the Wellcome Trust in collaboration with our key partners, the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KuHes), Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and University of Liverpool (UoL) among others. We are committed to promoting research and training led by Malawian & International scientists, with the aim of improving the health of people in Malawi and elsewhere in the Region.

We are seeking a professional and experienced Clinical Officer to join the Programme’s Clinical Investigations Unit (CIU). The CIU provides infrastructure and clinical expertise for the safe and standardized conduct of clinical and research activities, including endoscopies and lung spirometry. The successful candidate will assist in the safe and ethical conduct of these procedures as well as routine clinical practice at QECH. The Clinical Officer will report to the study Coordinator.

POSITION FUNCTION (PURPOSE):  In summary, why does the job exist?

The clinical officer performs advanced endoscopy procedures and routine clinical duties at the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.

 

Responsibilities

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: The major duties and tasks of this job.

  1. Clinical assessments, history taking, physical examination, spirometry
  2. Bronchoscopy, gastroscopy and endoscopy procedures
  3. Collection of blood and other clinical samples as outlined in study protocol

 

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: (i.e. Education, Training and Experience Requirements).

D(a)    Education: The minimum level of education required to perform all the duties of the job to standard.

  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine

D(b)    Experience: The minimum number of years of experience required to perform all the duties of the job to standard.

At least ____1___ years’ relevant experience

KEY COMPENTENCIES/ATTRIBUTES AND SKILLS (e.g. IT Skills, Personality, Communication, Teamwork etc.)

  • Clinical skills – experienced in basic patient care, vital signs monitoring
  • Experience with bronchoscopies – able to perform endoscopy procedures, patient preparation and post-procedure care.
  • Good communication skills – able to interact clearly and respectfully with patients and team members.
  • Team player – works well with others and supports a positive working environment.
  • Basic IT skills – data entry tools, and electronic medical records.
  • Attention to detail – careful when recording patient information and handling samples.
