Specialist – Agriculture, Food Systems and Livelihoods within the COUNTRY OFFICE based in
Lilongwe:

Position Description 

As a Climate Adaptation Specialist at CARE Malawi, s/he will provide technical advisory support and oversight focusing on the development and implementation of climate-resilient agriculture and food systems interventions anchored on a systems strengthening mindset. This dynamic role encompasses guiding these projects from ideation, inception to scalability and sustainability of impact leading to exit. This could include, where necessary, incentivizing or attracting private sector investments within the climate resilience space in Malawi. S/he should be an ambitious, innovative, and collaborative individual deeply committed to sustainability and positive change in the climate adaptation and resilience space for sustainable agriculture and livelihoods.

Specific duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Oversight technical implementation of all awards under CARE Malawi Climate Justice portfolio.
  • Work closely with the finance team to review monthly budgets versus actual, financial management information to ensure that all program expenditure is on track and does not exceed approved budget variance limits.
  • Work closely with the MERL team to ensure that all essential program, organizational metrics, and lessons learned are being adequately captured.
  • Facilitate synthesis of best practices and lessons learned and promote an overall culture of adaptive learning through systematic analysis and reflection on program data.
  • Proactively build strategic partnerships and representation with Government of Malawi ministries, agencies and departments as relevant.
  • Connect and productively engage with peers and donors in the Climate Adaptation, Climate Smart Agriculture, Climate Resilience and Natural Resource Management spaces in Malawi.
  • Contribute to enhancement of CARE Malawi localization agenda through deepened local partnerships, development of concept notes, expressions of interests and proposals for new initiatives.
  • In collaboration with CARE Malawi knowledge management team, pivot surveys as appropriate to generate learning and outcome harvests from past and ongoing climate resilience and climate smart agriculture interventions. It is expected that research will inform evidence-based thought leadership.
  • Develop partnerships and protocols for research in the climate resilience and climate smart agriculture spaces in Malawi.
  • Effectively represent CARE Malawi in all government-led, peer to peer and grassroots platforms on Climate Adaptation, Climate Resilience and Climate Smart Agriculture.
  • Identify, build and manage collaborative partnerships with consortium partners, sub-grantees, donors, and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure up to date documentation from the portfolio and repository of the same, for reference by others, and to inform adaptive management.

Required education and experience:

  • MSc degree in a field related to Climate Change, Agriculture, Agribusiness, with at least 4 years of work experience in the fields of climate change and the agri-food sector.
  • Possess in-depth knowledge and demonstrable experience in climate change adaptation, especially within the context of agriculture and food security.
  • Expertise in landscape approaches that contribute significantly to climate resilience.
  • Demonstrate a track record of effectively working in climate resilience space in Malawi and/or southern Africa.
  • Exhibit familiarity with biodiversity issues and their intersection with climate adaptation, enriching project strategies.
  • Combine strategic thinking with strong analytical skills, including financial modeling capabilities.
  • Build productive internal and external relationships and embrace a strong results-oriented, impact-centric approach.
  • Function as an effective team player with strong networking skills to facilitate meaningful connections
  • Excellent planning, administration, organizing, and prioritizing skills.
