The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited is incorporated under the Companies Act of the Laws of Malawi. Its core business is to procure, transmit and distribute electric power in Malawi as well as managing System Market Operations and Single Buyer licensees in Malawi. ESCOM is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacant position currently existing within the Corporation.
Chief Social and Gender Inclusion Officer – 1 Position
Grade: ES5
Location: Head Office – Blantyre
Supervised by: Chief Operations Officer (COO)
Purpose of the Job
To provide technical leadership and direction in matters relating to social and gender inclusion (SGI) to the Corporation.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Planning and reviewing an adaptive and innovative SGI strategy and workplan that connects and
complements wider program objectives - Organizing, coordinating, monitoring and reporting performance of all SGI related activities in the
Corporation, ensuring they are conducted in a creative, effective and efficient manner - Leading in designing and implementing capacity development initiatives in relation to gender and social inclusion
- Drafting thematic briefing papers on gender and social inclusion to keep stakeholders informed
- Serving as gender and social inclusion focal point for the Corporation
- Developing the related implementation plans for the above policies, monitoring and facilitating the
related activities. - Mainstreaming social & gender in Environmental & Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs), Environmental and Social Management Plans (ESMPs) and Resettlement Action Plans (RAPS)
- Reviewing various Corporations documents to ensure that social and gender issues are integrated and mainstreamed in Terms of Reference (ToRs), Goods Specifications, Bidding Documents and Contracts.
- Providing adequate social safeguards and attention to grievances as well as women empowerment,
connectivity to livelihood opportunities, including analysis of HIV and AIDS, trafficking in Persons and Child Labor risks, Gender Based violence, Violence against Children at Major Projects construction sites, during RCAP Implementation and community around sites and general community liaison issues. - Participating in drawing various ToRs and RFPs for Consultants, and evaluating the relevant submissions
- Establishing and maintaining contacts and providing effective interface with stakeholders for social and gender inclusion, donors and other related government bodies
- Raising continued awareness on social and gender issues across the Corporation Attributes and competencies
- Impeccable skills in Microsoft Office packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Effective verbal and written communication abilities
- Ability to manage time effectively in a high-pressure setting
- Excellent interpersonal and networking skills
- Strong analytical and programming skills
- Critical-thinking and assertiveness abilities
- Detail-oriented personality
- Ability to operate effectively both independently and as part of a team
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- The ideal candidate must have a minimum qualification of a Bachelor’s Degree in Gender, Social Sciences or Social Work from an accredited University.
- Applicants must have a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience.
- Experience working in project management will be added advantage
- Must be a registered member of a relevant professional body.
