Position:   Chief Laboratory Technician – Grade I (1 post)

 

Job summary

Reporting to the Senior Medical Officer, the Chief Laboratory Technician will be responsible for overseeing the clinical operations and management of the hospital. The incumbent will ensure the delivery of high – quality patient care, manage clinical resources and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.

 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Conducting examinations of various specimens sent from units within the hospital
• Monitor the efficient use of lab equipment
• Supervising specimen examination
• Supervising specimen processing
• Reporting of specimen results
• Compiling duty roster for lab staff
• Ordering of lab equipment, chemicals and reagents
• Advising health officers on matters of lab in the hospital
• Providing on job training to students and supervising junior lab staff
• Ensuring that all clinical staff are practicing legally and that they are duly registered with their respective Regulatory Bodies
• Liaising with other heads of sections on lab related matters
• Ensuring correct and complete recording of data in relevant HMIS registers and instruments
• Ensuring timely processing of data and dissemination to all relevant stakeholders including timely submission of HMIS and departmental reports to designated supervisor
• Lobbying with management and ensuring that required equipment is available and equitably distributed to meet hospital standards
• Identifying staff training needs and monitoring the implementation of continuous professional development of clinical staff
• Fostering effective communication and collaboration between laboratory staff, management and other stakeholders
• Supervising laboratory staff performance and consequently conducting performance evaluation biannually in consultation with Human Resource Department
• Taking a leading role in identifying training needs for the laboratory department to be included in the annual training plan
• Any other duties deem reasonable for the post

 

Qualifications

• Bachelor of science in Medical Laboratory Science from reputable training institution
• Registered with Medical Council of Malawi

 

Knowledge, Ability and Skills

• Well conversant with the health system in Malawi
• Ability to work independently and in a team
• Effective communication skills
• Problem identification and solving skills
