Ceramic Technician (um 11) (1 position)

 

Qualifications and Attributes

Applicants must be holders of a minimum of Diploma in Ceramics, or Fine Arts, or Pottery, or any related field. In addition, applicants must have at least three years’ experience in industrial ceramics production, processes and entrepreneurship at a recognized institution. Applicants with vast experience in the ceramic industry, plus qualifications in other relevant fields such as marketing, business administration, or electrical installation may be considered.

Applicants must further demonstrate advanced knowledge of working on the potter’s wheel, in an electric kiln, and on raw material processing equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Ceramic Technician’s key responsibilities shall include:

  • Overseeing daily operations and general cleanliness of the ceramics studio and facilities

  • Managing studio processes, practice regulations, and ensuring compliance with policies and industrial safety procedures

  • Managing and overseeing student firing schedules while adhering to student working-days’ schedules and timeframes

  • Taking inventory of tools, equipment and materials, and their requisition

  • Supervise and guide the production of decorative and utilitarian artworks for commercial purposes

  • Assist in identifying markets for pottery and other products in the Department

  • Carrying out clay body preparation and glaze formulation, and ensuring availability of required material to lecturers, students and visiting artists

  • Providing necessary technical assistance relating to teaching and student projects

  • Undertaking maintenance and general repairs of all equipment and accessories in conjunction with the Maintenance Department

  • Participating in the Department’s income generating activities and exhibitions where necessary

  • Any other duties assigned by the immediate supervisor and Head of Department from time to time

  1. Potter’s Assistant/Ceramic Studio Assistant (um 13) (1 position)

Qualifications and Attributes

  • Applicants must be holders of a minimum of Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE), O’Level, or GSCE. In addition, applicants must have experience in ceramics production, processes and entrepreneurship at a recognized institution. Applicants with Certificate in art, ceramics, pottery or any other relevant field will have an added advantage.

  • All applicants must demonstrate knowledge of working on the potter’s wheel, in electric kilns and in raw material processing.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Potter’s Assistant’s key responsibilities shall include:

  • Clay body preparation and making glazes

  • Tutoring students on the potters’ wheel

  • Firing pottery products and recycling clay for student assignments

  • Operating kilns and maintaining the safety of the ceramic studio area

  • Periodic mixing of the class glazes and slips

  • Producing such ceramic ware as vases, utensils, tiles, and electrical insulators for commercial purposes

  • Preparation of demonstration materials for students

  • Supervision and monitoring of electric kiln firings

  • Any other duties assigned by the Ceramic Technician from time to time
