Job Title : Business Development Manager

Reports to : Country Director

Location : Country Office, Lilongwe, Malawi

ROLE PURPOSE

The Business Development Manager is responsible for leading and managing all business development efforts and capacity building initiatives for the Malawi office. The post holder provides leadership in the mobilisation, development and management of partnerships with the purpose of mobilising resources for further expansion of the Country office. This involves providing strategic guidance to senior leadership on resource mobilisation; proposal development; staff capacity building in donor compliance and reporting.

KEY ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Srategic guidance on resource mobilization work
  • Lead on the development, implementation, and update of the WRM resource mobilization and donor engagement strategy, building on the existing donor mapping and ongoing engagements.
  • Set and monitor annual priorities and quarterly objectives and key objectives (OKR) for resource mobilization and donor engagement, and the supporting action plan for achieving the OKRs
  • Advise on best practice and channels for resource mobilization including but not limited to traditional donors i.e church partners, International Financial Institutions (IFIs), Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), multi-partner funds, foundations, private sector, as well as other innovative financing mechanisms, etc.
  • Engage in targeted networking to establish connections, leading to the development, mobilization, prioritization and management of partnerships with the purpose of mobilizing resources
  • Lead the development of donor outreach materials, including but not limited to brochures, capacity statements, concept notes, expressions of interest, etc. that are in line with donor/partner criteria and audience needs
  • Support WRM’s senior leadership in preparing for high-level engagements (panels, speeches, webinars, etc.) with funding partners.

Proposal development

  • Regularly visit websites of key donors and identify funding opportunities
  • Coordinate the Go/No-go decisions with senior management team for potential project funding
  • Coordinate roles and responsibilities and agree on timeframes for proposal development among proposal development teams.
  • During the proposal development process, lead in key communications between WRM and the potential donor
  • Review donor compliance resources, provide guidance on the donor compliance issues to all relevant staff and ensure the right templates are used
  • Review proposal budget and narrative to ensure all necessary costs have been included and that the proposal aligns with donor requirements and standards
  • Coordinate the internal review process and sign off of the full proposal pack to ensure it is of high quality and complete according to specifications in the RFP
  • During the proposal review and negotiation stage, facilitate the revisions and ensure timely submission of the proposal
  • Submit full package of proposal to potential donor and share final submission with all relevant staff when submitted
  • Coordinate the after-action internal review within 1 week of proposal submission
  • Plan and conduct programmes assessments and surveys and feed assessments results into proposals

Donor compliance and partnerships management

  • Understand donor compliance requirements relating to award portfolio and ensure deadlines are met
  • Support project managers and staff with preparation and facilitation of effective awards kick off meetings
  • Plan and deliver training and capacity building related to awards management/donor compliance as required
  • Ensure potential issues and amendment requests are flagged promptly to WRM management then to donors. Prepare donor waiver/derogation requests.
  • Ensure that all appropriate donor formats are available and staff have a clear understanding of donor requirements/expectations throughout the award cycle
  • Train and support staff in proposal development, donor compliance and reporting
  • Provide clear and concise guidance for proposal development team for each proposal process
  • Provide clear and concise guidance for proposal development team in donor reporting and compliance requirements for each successful project
  • Contribute to or participate in the internal proposal design workshops as needed
  • Manage portfolio team to ensure all key stakeholders have the up to-date donor formats and guidelines and are orientated to them.

Staff management

  • Coach and mentor staff in business development and grants management.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree or equivalent in fields related to International Affairs, Public Policy, Development, Entrepreneurship, or Communications. Bachelor’s degree in above fields in combination with 5 years at senior officer level; OR 3 years at manager level in a non-governmental organisation in: fundraising, proposal development, programmes operations and or programme development and quality

EXPERIENCE

  • 5 years at senior officer level; OR 3 years at manager level in a non-governmental organisation in: fundraising, proposal development, programmes operations and or programme development and quality Strong track record in fundraising, proposal writing and leading donor relations with governments and corporate partners.
  • Experience in advising senior management on fundraising and partnership opportunities.
  • Experience and knowledge of programme/project management; financial, budget and grants management; and people management
  • Experience in building networks resulting in securing new opportunities for the organisation
  • Strategic thinking skills to develop highly ambitious business strategies and the track record of delivery.
  • Ability to analyze information, evaluate options and to think and plan strategically.

  • Ability to build strong and sustainable relationships and capability to interact at all levels within the organization.
  • Ability to challenge, convince and manage multiple stakeholders with maturity and tact
