Partners in Health (PIH) is a non-profit organization based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. Through service delivery, training, advocacy and research, PIH works globally to bring the benefits of modern science to those most in need and to serve as an antidote to despair. PIH has programs in Haiti, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Kazakhstan
and Boston. Through our partnership with Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, we support a wide range of programs in dozens of other countries around the world.

PIH began working in Malawi in 2007, where today we support the Ministry of Health (MOH) to serve a catchment area of 165,000 through 12 health centers and two hospitals in partnership with our sister organizations.

Partners in Health/Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (PIH/APZU) has its headquarters in Neno District with operations across the country.

We therefore seek to recruit suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the following positions:

5. Position: Biomedical Technician

Reports to: Biomedical Engineer

Commitment: Full Time (Monday-Friday)

Working Hours: Regular Office Hours (40Hrs/Week)

Location: Neno Boma

Position Overview

We are looking for a dynamic biomedical technician to join our biomedical department. In this role, the biomedical technician will be in charge of overseeing the care and use of all biomedical equipment, performing machinery repairs, and training staff on the correct use of equipment. S/he will be answerable to the Biomedical Engineer and act in his/her capacity when they are not around and sending monthly reports and all required information whenever necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance checks on biomedical equipment through testing, calibrating, and troubleshooting.
  • Install new biomedical equipment and adjusting the device according to medical specifications.
  • Train staff members including biomed teams and clinical service providers both at the hospital and primary health facility level to operate and care for equipment with physical demonstrations and educational presentations.
  • Update inventory, place orders, and verify deliveries.
  • Repair faulty machinery on a routine basis and tend to emergency repairs as needed.
  • Keep a digital record of equipment repairs, faulty components, and recalibrated devices.
  • Ensure that all equipment meets PIH/APZU standards of safety and quality, and complies with relevant laws.
  • Install and test medical equipment.
  • Maintain and repair medical equipment.
  • Conduct safety checks on equipment.
  • Train and advice users of safety procedures.
  • Regularly visit hospitals and health facilities to review and monitor functionality of medical equipment and devices and provide repair services or elevate to Biomedical Engineer for further support
  • Work with other staff in determining needs of equipment.
  • Performing preventive maintenance on biomedical equipment including PSA oxygen plants.
  • Supervise and manage the day to day functions of Plant Operators
  • Collect data and support with reporting as required

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • BSc Degree in Biomedical Engineering with at least 2 to 4 years working experience
  • Appropriate Certification in the repair specialist equipment and systems from the relevant manufacturer.
  • Proficient in the use of computers, with a working knowledge of the Microsoft office suite.
  • Interpreting schematic diagrams to perform effective repair and maintenance on basic biomedical equipment
  • A minimum of two years’ experience as a biomedical technician.
  • Exceptional knowledge of the structure and uses of biomedical equipment.
  • Solid technical skills and the ability to repair machinery with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to present complex information in layman’s terms.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and thrive in a fast-paced medical environment
  • Proficient dexterity and hand-eye coordination, as well as physical stamina to lift heavy equipment
