African Parks (AP) is a non-profit organisation that takes on direct responsibility for rehabilitation and long-term management of protected areas, in partnership with governments and local communities. By adopting a business approach to conservation, supported by donor funding, African Parks aims to make each park sustainable in the long-term, thereby contributing to economic development and poverty alleviation. Currently African Parks in Malawi manages Majete Wildlife Reserve, Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserves and Liwonde National Park.
African Parks – Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve invites suitably qualified, experienced and passionate Malawians to fill the following vacant position.
Position: BEEKEEPING ASSISTANT
Reports to: Community Liaison Officer
Location: Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Plan, Implement and Monitor all project activities to ensure change/adaptive management strategy is achieved.
- Conduct routine hive inspections with beekeepers
- Assist beekeepers with apiary site assessment and selection
- Ensure timely distribution of beekeeping materials and equipment to beekeepers
- Facilitate and coordinate honey harvesting and processing with beekeepers
- Ensure timely packaging of honey at the processing facility.
- Oversee delivery of honey to various selling points within and outside Nkhotakota Facilitate basic beekeeping and group dynamics trainings for beekeepers
- Coordinate all beekeeping activities with staff, community members and stakeholders engaged to the project.
- Coordinate the Project Delivery Schedule to ensure timely delivery of outputs/ deliverables.
Qualification and Experience
- Diploma in any of the following: Natural Resources Management, Environmental Management, Agriculture and Community Development from any recognized institution.
- Must have not less than 5 years’ experience in managing bee colonies
- Must have knowledge in colony management, handling, and bee biology
- Attention to details and the ability to work independently
- Ability to work with multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural groups
- Professional approach with strong work ethic
- Excellent communicator in English and local language – oral and written
- Team player and ability to prioritise competing demands
- Self-starter and ready to work in rural areas Proficiency in Chichewa and English
- Must be computer literate
- A valid motor cycle license is a must.
- Those with motor vehicle driving license will have added advantage
- Those with higher qualification are also allowed to apply.
