Malawi Electoral Commission

The Malawi Electoral Commission, “the Commission”, is a body corporate created under Section 75(1) of the Constitution, to supervise, direct and preside over the conduct of all elections in Malawi. In accordance with Section 13 on the Malawi Electoral Commission Act, the Commission seeks to appoint a suitability qualified person with relevant experience to fill the following position within its secretariat.

Job Title: Assistant Developer

Number Required: 1

Responsible to: Developer
Location: MEC Headoffice

Purpose

To assist in designing, building, testing, and maintaining software systems. The Assistant Developer provides technical support throughout the software development cycle and helps in ensuring high-quality, maintainable code under the guidance of the Developer.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Writing and maintaining simple, clean program code
  • Supporting the production of efficient and functional code modules.
  • Assisting in creating and executing testing protocols.
  • Help in identifying and fixing bugs in programs under minimum supervision.
  • Supporting the maintenance of software systems
  • Helping integrate software components and modules.
  • Conducting user training on developed software and tools
  • Collecting and organizing user feedback for system improvements.

Qualification

  • A Diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related fields.
  • Certifications in programming or development tools are an advantage.

Core competence

  • Willingness to learn and grow in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and follow instructions.
  • Problem-solving attitude.

Technical Skills

  • Familiarity with the following programming languages (e.g., PHP, JavaScript, Java, Python, C#).
  • Basic understanding of web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
  • Knowledge of relational databases such as Oracle, MySQL or PostgreSQL.
  • Familiarity with Git or other version control systems.
  • Understanding basic testing and debugging practices.

Experience

  • 2 years experience
  • Academic or work experience in software development is a plus
