Tumaini Letu - Malawi

Tumaini Letu (Swahili for “our Hope”) is a non-profit organization operating within the Dzaleka refugee camp and its surrounding areas in Dowa, Malawi. Tumaini letu’s mission is to promote and support the economic, social and cultural inclusion of refugees in Malawi through capacity building, business opportunities, job creation, and arts and culture as a tool for refugee rights advocacy.

The Assistant Communications Officer’s primary responsibility is to create and distribute content and to promote the Tumaini Letu brand, activities and products. To act as a liaison between the Tumaini Letu, the public, and the media to ensure that the Tumaini brand remains top of mind.  The Officer will work in close collaboration with ED as well as the Programs Officer. He/she will implement positive and effective relationships with the Media and key stakeholders in the interest of promoting Tumaini Letu’s objectives.

Core Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Managing the Organization’s social media platforms and actively proposing social media initiatives supporting the overall communications efforts;

  • Monitoring traditional and social media and produce regular coverage reports;

  • Managing the Organization’s website and ensuring that is always up to date and consistent with the other digital platforms;

  • Producing a quarterly digital newsletter;

  • Coming up with ingenious ways to raise awareness;

  • Maintaining and update the communications unit’s back office tools: the editorial calendar, the photo-library and the contacts database;

  • Overseeing the production of print products such as brochures, annual reports, posters and leaflets with the Organization’s external graphic designers, printers and other partners;

  • Managing the Organization’s inventory of public communications material and ensuring that key products are always on display and accessible;

  • Writing, submitting and uploading press releases as required;

  • Establishing good relationships with staff, members of the public, and the media;

Minimum requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, media, mass communication or any relevant course
  • 1 year experience working in similar position
  • Knows how to create content
  • Experience using Canva or any content creation tools

  • Good communication skills both written and oral
