Background

The Evangelical Lutheran Development Service (ELDS) is a Development service arm of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi (ELCM). It was established in 1989 in response to a request from ELCM and Malawi Government, primarily to assist the Mozambican Refugees who were in Malawi then. ELDS is operational in 13 districts across the country namely Chikwawa, Neno, Mwanza, Zomba and Phalombe in south; Dowa, Dedza, Kasungu, Lilongwe Rural, Nkhota Kota and Mchinji in Centre; Mzimba and Chitipa in the North. ELDS works in rural areas to reduce human suffering and poverty through sustainable development (food and nutrition security, Micro-finance, Value Addition and Marketing; Water, Sanitation and Hygiene; Health Services (Maternal and Child Health, Malaria and Trachoma Elimination, Sexual Reproductive Health); Climate Change and disaster management; HIV and AIDS, Psychosocial, Gender, Human Rights and advocacy as cross cutting.

With support from DAI Global UK under the Scottish Government’s Climate Justice Fund, ELDS will be
implementing a 2 and a half-year project “Climate Just Communities – Malawi” in TA Ngwelero in Zomba District. ELDS is therefore inviting applications from suitably qualified persons to be considered for positions below.

Accounts Assistant

Reporting to the Finance Officer through the Project Officer – Zomba, the Accounts Assistant is responsible for joint preparation, with the project team, of monthly, quarterly and annual field project budgets; maintaining internal control and check systems, procedures and methods; at project level, Ensuring that there is proper maintenance of financial information under generally accepted accounting principles to provide a basis for consolidation by the Finance Manager , Producing, within agreed time frames and in standard formats, Financial Monitoring Reports. Working in close liaison with the Project Team at Field level, government officials, and other relevant stakeholders to enhance the achievement of the project.

Experience & Skills:

  • The Finance Assistant Officer should have a minimum of a Diploma in Commerce (Accountancy) or Accountancy with at least 2 years of work experience at least two of which must be donor-funded projects. The candidate must be conversant with computerized accounting.
