Job Summary

The overall responsibility of the Accountant is to provide financial information to Management by analysing accounting data and preparing financial reports for the Education Department. The Accountant plays a pivotal role in preparing asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analysing accounts information. This position involves documenting financial transactions by entering accounts information.

Responsibilities

The Accountant directly reports to the Education Secretary and supervises the School Bursars on financial-related matters as follows:

1. Preparing periodic consolidated financial statements; including profit and loss accounts, budgets, cash flow statements, cost of revenue schedules, variance analysis and commentaries for all the Schools under the Department.
2. Advising the staff at the Education Department on financial expenditure controls and revenue generation activities.
3. Maintaining cordial relationships with the Internal Auditor and other cooperating partners.
4. Coordinating, preparing and submission of the Department’s financial budgets to the Board through Management and the Finance and Audit Committee (FAC) of the Education Board.
5. Analysing financial performance and contributing to short-medium and long-term financial planning and forecasts.
6. Maintaining proper accounting records and financial statements in readiness for internal and external audits.
7. Responsible for maintaining financial records and reports monthly and reconciliation of individual Schools’ accounts.

8. Supervising performance assessment of staff in the Accounts Section of the Department.
9. Prepare annual budgets in conjunction with the Education Secretary
10. Update and implement all necessary financial and accounting policies and procedures
11. Monitor and control expenditures to ensure adherence to budget policies
12. Develop, maintain and evaluate financial and accounting control systems
13. Ensure procurement of goods and services is done timely and following laid down procedures.

Qualifications and Experience

1. Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance or professional accounting qualification such as CIMA, ACCA or equivalent.
2. A Minimum of five (5) years working experience. Those with a School set-up experience will have an added advantage.
3. Experience in budget formulation and financial reporting.
4. Proven track record of good advisory skills.
5. High-level knowledge of internet-based accounting packages specifically QuickBooks etc.
6. Practising Presbyterian Christian.
