The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) is the advocacy arm of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Zomba tasked with overseeing social justice, human rights, and democratic governance issues. Since its inception in 1992, CCJP has implemented numerous interventions supporting the church’s efforts aimed at ensuring the spiritual, social, and economic transformation and development of individuals, families, and communities in the Diocese. CCJP’s initiatives focus on promoting justice and peace, human rights, democratic governance, and the protection of children, women and persons with disabilities in the communities served by the church. In order to ensure high-quality project implementation, CCJP -Zomba seeks to recruit a highly motivated and experienced individual the following vacant position:

Job Title: Accountant

Reports to: CCJP Executive Director and ZARDD Executive Director

The key responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Assisting preparing, examining and analyzing accounting records, financial statements, and other financial reports to assess accuracy, conformance and reporting and procedural standards.
  • Compute taxes owed and prepare tax returns, ensuring compliance with payments, reporting and other tax requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with tax statues by remitting tax to Malawi Revenue Authority on monthly basis.
  • Assist the director of finance and administration in development, maintenance and analyzing budgets and prepare periodic reports that compare budget costs to actual costs.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, modification and documentation of record keeping and accounting systems.
  • Ensure safekeeping of project resources.
  • Maintain Asset register and ensure that it is up to date.
  • Providing assistance to project staff in liquidation.
  • Supervise petty cash by working hand in hand with accounts assistants and administrative secretary.
  • Prepare and deposit salaries into employees’ various accounts and sort out any problem related to the same.
  • Procure office materials including stationary.
  • Recording transactions in quick book.
  • Bank Reconciliation.
  • Follow up and resolve any issues on any questionable costs in the line with donor and agency regulations and GAAP.
  • Ensure the accuracy of advance requests.
  • Prepare budget comparison reports on monthly basis, manage the distribution process to all levels of management and provide practical guidance on the use and interpretation of the reports.
  • Assist in project budget amendments, closely work with staff, facilitate and coordinate the closure of expired projects in compliance with ZARDD & Donor policies and procedures as guided by the Grants Closure Checklist.
  • Making follow ups on outstanding liquidations.
  • Any other duties assigned by management time to time

Qualifications and Experience Required:

Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in accounting/Finance, Business Administration from recognized training institution with three years of progressive experience on the position in a donor funded environment, knowledge.
