African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP)

The African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP) is an independent non-profit organization founded in 2012 by a partnership of African development organizations. AFAP is a service provider to the private and public sectors on sustainable development projects and policies focused on market-driven business solutions in fertilizer and agribusiness for agriculture productivity. AFAP combines technical expertise with entrepreneurial innovation.

AFAP’s public-private partnership strategy is ultimately designed to build the capacity of African fertilizer and agribusiness SMEs and increase agricultural productivity. The execution of that strategy with partners, results in increasing food security, income, job
creation, and agriculture contribution to national GDPs.

The monitoring and evaluation officer will be responsible for all monitoring, evaluation and reporting activities in Malawi for AFAP.

The role will be responsible for developing processes, designing, and executing monitoring and evaluation functions in collaboration with program and field staff to ensure successful implementation of M&E strategies and performance monitoring plans. This will involve
identifying, tracking, and monitoring key project indicators and subsequently providing the analysis and creatively sharing the data and lessons learned to stakeholders.

The monitoring and evaluation officer will be responsible for the oordination of data collection, analyses of the information such as inputs, outputs, outcomes and impact of the program. Processing, and analysing data for various studies and evaluation exercises
using platforms such as ODK and Kobo Collect.

The monitoring and evaluation officer will work collaboratively with key staff in headquarters and country program staff to plan M&E activities, budgets, timelines, and level of effort requests.

The role will ensure that monitoring, evaluation and learning systems are consistently integrated and implemented throughout AFAP’s program activities. The monitoring and evaluation officer will integrate beneficiary accountability plans and activities into programs, playing a key role in ensuring that the reporting needs of key stakeholders are met and ensuring production and dissemination of stories from the field.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, track and report on the progress and status of indicators of all the AFAP Malawi projects/programs.
  • Ensure development, utilization, and management of ODK and other technologies programmed data collection tools for the production of diverse project reports.
  • Develop standard data collection tools and reporting templates to ensure consistent collection of high-quality data to support evidence-based decision making, planning, coordination, and control.
  • Collect all necessary verification documents including activities, surveys, field studies, progress reports, photography, video, and stories for dissemination as required.
  • Maintain and update the performance monitoring plans in conjunction with the project milestones.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to interact skilfully and diplomatically with local partners, donors, and other NGO’s.
  • Ability to establish and maintain systems to measure, compile and analyse data for project management.
  • Strong working knowledge of ODK and similar technologies.
  • Demonstrated self-starter (motivated with ability to adapt and deal with pressure).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Ability to communicate monitoring and evaluation principles.
  • Initiative taker with an ability to plan and organise own workload.

Requirements

  • University Degree in Agribusiness, Agriculture or Social Sciences.
  • 3 years of experience managing agribusiness M&E systems including facilitating surveys.
  • 3 years of experience in data analysis and communication including impact report writing.
  • Computer skills demonstrating competency in MS Office Suite and at least one statistical package such as SPSS and ODK a mobile data collection platform.
  • Experienced and proficient in writing reports and M&E sections of proposals, including performance monitoring plans for external audiences.
  • Prior experience setting up and/or implementing routine data collection systems for NGO’s.
  • Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation standards, survey methodologies and results Based M&E Systems.
