Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority

Introduction

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) is a statutory body established under
the Communications Act, 1998 to regulate the provision of services in the communications sector
of Malawi, comprising telecommunications, posts and broadcasting.

Currently, under the Communications Act, 2016, MACRA is mandated to regulate and monitor
the provision of communications services and ensure that, as far as it is practicable, reliable, and
affordable communications services are provided throughout Malawi and are sufficient to meet
the demand for such services in accordance with the principles of transparency, certainty, market orientation, efficiency, and consumer satisfaction. The Vision of MACRA is to create a universal access and usage of ICT services in Malawi to facilitate the development of the ICT Sector through efficient and effective regulation and research.

Technical Intern – Data Protection Authority (One year)

Job Purpose:

Assist in the registration process of Data Controllers and Processors.

Duties:

I. Assist in the development and maintenance of a registration platform for Data Controllers
and Processors.
II. Support the technical review of registrations and ensure compliance with data protection
regulations.
III. Help in analyzing data submissions for accuracy and relevance.
IV. Collaborate with IT and development teams to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues
related to the registration system.
V. Participate in the implementation of data security measures and best practices.
VI. Conduct research on emerging technologies and their implications for data protection.
VII. Assist in preparing technical documentation and user guidelines for the registration platform.
VIII. Support the establishment and management of additional registers (e.g., Data Protection Officers, data breaches, data processing activities, complaint Management).
IX. Assist in developing automated reporting tools for monitoring compliance with registrations and other records.

Education and Professional Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a Degree in Computer Science, Information
    Technology, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of data protection laws and regulations (e.g., GDPR).
  • Familiarity with database management and programming languages (e.g., SQL, Python).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
