AFIDEP is a regional non-profit research and policy Institute whose mission is to institutionalize a culture of consistent use of evidence in public policy formulation and implementation to address various development challenges in Africa. Our work focuses on five thematic areas namely: Population Dynamics and Demographic Dividend, Health and Wellbeing, Transformative Education and Skills Development, Environment and Climate Change, and Governance and Accountability. The Institute is registered as a Non-Governmental Organization in Kenya and Malawi where it has offices and in the USA as a 50l c3 non-profit organization.
AFIDEP is looking to recruit a research and policy associate to join our research and policy programmes in our Health and well-being thematic areas. The successful candidates will lead and/or be involved in research and policy work in the African region. The candidate will be based in our Lilongwe office in Malawi.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Take part in the conceptualization, design, and implementation of research, capacity building, and policy engagement programmes.
- Conduct research evidence syntheses and translation into policy-oriented advocacy materials and accountability tools to include secondary analysis of various data sets, systematic reviews and other related forms of evidence
- Contribute to the design, implementation, and monitoring of cross-sectoral programming initiatives, including project proposals, work plans, and progress reports and fundraising.
- Develop scientific writing for various research knowledge consumers and publish policy-oriented research in journals.
- Promote the application of research findings in decision-making processes at national, regional, and international levels.
- Engage policymakers to promote the application of research evidence in decision-making processes.
- Develop capacity in translating, disseminating, and using research evidence for policymakers and other stakeholders at national and regional levels.
Qualifications
- Masters’ Degree in Public Health or other health-related fields with at least 3 years of practical experience in infectious diseases like HIV/TB research and programming;
- Experience in the management and coordination of research programmes and partnerships, and monitoring and evaluation of programmes
- In-depth knowledge of current and emerging health issues in the African context, programme management skills; and deep and strategic thinking, with close attention to detail;
- Excellent writing skills, including policy-oriented reports and scientific papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals;
- Skills in evidence translation and policy/programme analysis, strong qualitative and quantitative research and ability to engage policy makers
- Strong interpersonal skills with effective team management skills Strong adaptability skills with the ability to set priorities, manage time effectively, and handle multiple ongoing tasks on tight deadlines.
