STAFF VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to be considered for the following vacant posts in various establishments of the University.

ASSISTANT LIBRARIAN (REFERENCE SERVICES)

The successful candidate shall help library patrons access and use information resources,
as well as to provide reference and research support to library users. He/She shall foster
the pleasure of reading by offering tailored guidance and support to library clients based
on their reading interests and needs.

Specific Duties and Responsibility

  • Provide reference, readers’ advisory, and referral services to patrons, in person, by telephone, email and social media.
  • Create bibliographies, user guides, promotional materials, and publicity spotlighting the library’s collections, services, and programmes.
  • Organise displays to enhance the library experience and to promote use of library resources.
  • Perform manual and automated bibliographic searches.
  • Facilitate interlibrary loans.
  • Assist in developing library collections.
  • Supervise Reference Assistants and other personnel as assigned.
  • Assist in planning and implementing programmes and public relations activities.
  • Explain basic library functions, services and resources to the public.
  • Train and supervise library assistants, student assistants and work experience placements.
  • Collect data for statistical analysis and submit reports submission to the College Librarian
  • Update staff on current library practices and procedures.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by relevant authorities.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills, and Attributes

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science with three (3) years post-qualification experience in a professional library position. Or
  • Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science with not less than five (5) years post-qualification experience in a professional library position.
  • Knowledge of professional library methods, reference resources, and practices.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to deal with the public professionally and courteously.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective supervisory and working relationships with co-workers.
  • Ability to understand and interpret library policies, procedures, and rules and regulations.
  • Ability to initiate, organize, and follow through on programs, services, and projects.
  • Solid knowledge of current trends and developments in the library profession.
  • Excellent pedagogical skills

Terms and Conditions of Engagement

All the successful candidates will be engaged on an initial 2-year contract before they can be considered for permanent appointment based on satisfactory performance. Remuneration will be in line with LUANAR Staff Regulations and Conditions of Service applicable to staff on fixed-term contract.
