JOB ADVERTISEMENT-IT SPECIALIST

BACKGROUND

As a federal enterprise, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its objective in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. GIZ operates in more than 130 countries around the globe. In Malawi, GIZ has been working for more than 50 years. Malawi is a priority for German international cooperation and currently focuses on four priority areas: good financial governance, food and nutrition security, private sector development in rural areas, and health and social protection.

A. RESPONSIBILITIES

The IT Specialist is responsible for:

  • Ensuring that IT and management systems operate and function correctly
  • Implementing and complying with GIZ IT standards
  • Regularly updating computer software
  • Providing technical support to projects and programmes by dealing with questions and problems relating to IT and databases

B. TASKS

The IT specialist will perform the following tasks:

Hardware

  • Ensuring the availability of up-to-date hardware (laptops, servers, all PCs) in accordance with current GIZ standards.
  • Dealing with maintenance of PCs, notebooks, printers, digital cameras, scanners and other hardware.
  • Discussing possible new purchases of or improvements to hardware and networks with the administrative manager, based on the requirements and recommendations outlined in GIZ’s IT guidelines.

Software

  • Implementing, maintaining and configuring all standard GIZ software (e.g. APS, AMS, MS Office, WinPACCS, SAP).
  • Testing new or upgraded software and updates all the software to the latest versions.
  • Providing and maintaining backup programmes to ensure system availability.
  • Regularly updating antivirus software.

The internet & websites

  • Maintaining and updating existing web sites.
  • Coordinating necessary modifications to the existing home page in consultation with office management and the project or programme managers

Operational support

  • Supporting availability of the LAN, installs any updates and ensures routine, professional maintenance of the necessary hardware, installs and maintains the LAN.
  • Consulting with suppliers to guarantee the availability of the network, telephone system and IT hardware.
  • Monitoring the market for quality and value for money and is responsible for specifying and procuring computer equipment.

General tasks

  • Managing and ensuring general administration of the entire IT system.
  • Backing up data and dealing with the problem of data security.
  • Resolving all computer and internet problems, prepares all the necessary information and provides phone support.
  • Ensuring that an IT emergency service is available.
  • Notifying the GIZ IT help desk of fundamental problems with GIZ IT applications.
  • Advising on IT projects.
  • Maintaining a list of all hardware and software systems, and updates this to reflect changes.
  • Documenting the installation and settings on the server and all computers.
  • Performing other duties and tasks at the request of management

C. REQUIRED EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & COMPETENCES

Education Qualifications

  • BSc/MSc in IT, Computer Science or equivalent

Professional experience

  • At least 3 years’ professional experience in a comparable position

Competences and skills

  • Familiarity with IT hardware and software used at GIZ, IT network systems, database software, GIZ intranet and basic understanding of specific GIZ software (SAP, APS, AMS, PACCS, etc.)
  • Outstanding working knowledge of ITC technologies (related software, phone, fax, email, the internet) and computer applications (e.g. MS Office)
  • Good knowledge of the European language widely used in the country, ideally a knowledge of German
  • Willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures are agreed with management
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to meet strict deadlines
