Chemonics International Inc., a U.S.-based international development consulting firm, seeks the following positions for the USAID Next Generation Early Grade Reading Activity (NextGen) in Malawi. The $75 million activity aims to solidify and build on the contributions made to date as part of the implementation of Malawi’s National Reading Program (NRP) towards improving the delivery of high-quality early primary reading instruction in all Malawian primary schools. We are currently seeking qualified professionals for the following position:

Chemonics International Inc. seeks an Accountant for the USAID Next Generation Early Grade Reading Activity (NextGen) in Malawi. This is a long-term position that will be based in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Responsibilities include:

  • Perform accurate, complete and timely financial reporting using the ABACUS system, including monthly accrual/projection spreadsheets, and ensure timely submission to the Washington Office. Prepare and/ or review ad hoc analysis and reporting as needed.
  • Monitor preparation and perform analysis of financial reports relative to budget and monthly forecasting.
  • Support monthly submission of wire transfer request to the HO.
  • Review the internal financial control systems to ensure that appropriate mechanisms, procedures, and systems are in place. Ensure proper safeguards of funds and compliance with established USAID and Chemonics financial and accounting procedures.
  • Review and ensure proper authorization and approval and timely processing of payment/reimbursement requests for employees/suppliers/vendors.
  • Plan, perform and supervise internal audits of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and petty cash.
  • Review and approve bank reconciliations and reconciliation of petty cash and fund report at time of replenishment.
  • Review submission of all tax withholdings (payroll income tax, deduction at source) and corresponding reports (VAT reports) to relevant parties.
  • Review payroll and ensure allocation of payroll costs to appropriate general ledger accounts.
  • Work closely with internal and external auditors during field program audits
  • Serve as a resource person for technical and finance staff on Chemonics and USAID policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for the Project Management Unit (PMU) and Field Accounting Support Team (FAST) in Washington for all matters related to project finance.
  • Interact with bank and other officials on an as-needed basis.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or a certification in accounting or financial management.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of work experience in accounting, bookkeeping, and/or financial analysis.
    Previous experience as a USAID-funded project accountant preferred.
  • Experience processing payroll for 40+ staff.
  • Knowledge of tax rules of Malawi with experience withholding and remitting to various state governments.
  • Experience working with ABACUS accounting software is highly desirable.
  • Excellent working capabilities with Microsoft Excel, Word and other software packages.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective, sustainable relationships with project staff, tax authorities, USAID Mission personnel, and staff from the general development and business community.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, accept and discharge substantial responsibilities, prioritize work assignments, meet deadlines, and to exercise professional judgment.
  • Good interpersonal skills, honesty, and commitment to excellence.
  • Written and spoken proficiency in English.
